Resources for Going (and Staying) Freelance
As a freelance UX/UI designer myself, these are some of the resources I wish I had when I first quit my day job. I hope they help you as well!
- Creating a Standout Design Portfolio: The Ultimate Guide. An 8,000 word, ~100-illustration mega blog post series on creating a design portfolio. It covers common mistakes, best practices and has annotated examples of great portfolios.
- Starting a Project: Brand & Goals Tired of getting AWFUL design feedback? My top tip: get clear on goals with your client. I explain in-depth how deciding on design goals can make the whole process smoother. This video includes an actual client presentation of mine as an example 🙂
- 5 Practical Exercises to Learn UI Design (For Free). These are my top recommendations for what to do to get better at UI design. Simple as that!
- "Design is a Job" by Mike Monteiro. OK, I didn't write it, but it was so instrumental to my career that I have to recommend it to you. A straight-shooting guide to finding clients, presenting your work, and getting paid. (note: the second edition has very politicized branding, but the essential skills-related content is still there 👍)
